"I'm crazy like a fool"

RIP Alphonso "Bobby" Farrell aged 61 in a hotel room in Russia...gotta be something suspicious in that! Always loved the part in his hair.

Judging from this album cover, they were enslaved by Jabba the Hutt in 1977. Hang on, wasn't that when the first Star Wars movie was released. I reckon I know where George Lucas got his inspiration for Jabba's appearance in Return of the Jedi in 1983.

"...the facist regime"

"Hey Ho, Let's Go!"

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing a one off gig by the Toronados at the Barley Corn in Johnston Street, Collingwood. All Ramones covers, except for a couple of standards with a Ramones-esque interpretation.

"Love is big, love is small, love is free, love is all"

RIP RJD yesterday from stomach cancer. He may have fronted both Rainbow and Black Sabbath, but from a chart point of view, Ronnie James Dio will be best remembered in Australia for his 1974 hit "Love Is All" from Roger Glover's concept album The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast. His other claim to fame is that during his time with Sabbath, he is credited with popularizing the "devil's horns" gesture now associated with heavy metal fans.

"All that scratching's making me itch"

RIP Malcolm (aged 64)...that's him, third from right.

"I'm in love. What's that song? I'm in love with that song"

RIP Alex Chilton on St Patrick's Day (yesterday). Best known as the voice of The Box Tops ("The Letter") and the genius behind Big Star. A favourite Big Star moment for me is "September Gurls" which The Bangles covered on their smash hit album Different Light in 1986 (the one featruring "Manic Monday" and "Walk Like An Egyptian"). And of course, in 1987 The Replacements released their homage to the man himself"

"Don't you know that you're toxic"

On this day in 2002, Britney launched her acting career with the release of "Cross Roads".
Perhaps she will get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame too! Perhaps not...her acting's TOXIC!

Sunday, February 14, 2010

"The day the music died"

Buddy Holly's funeral was held on this day in Lubbock, Texas in 1959.

Saturday, February 6, 2010

"It was twenty years ago today"

Twenty years ago today : Billy Idol had an MBA in which he sustained a number of fractures. As a consequence, he couldn't appear in Oliver Stone's movie about The Doors. He'd recovered by 1998 so he could appear in The Wedding Singer as himself.

"Rise up, gather round, rock this place to the ground"

Today in 1983, Pyromania began a run of 92 consecutive weeks on the US charts. It sold over six million copies in the US, despite not reaching no.1.

Elton John became Sir Reginald on this day in 1998.

Friday, January 29, 2010

"We've got a ballad about a salad brain with a surgeon's little dirty dinner game"

Unfortunately for all prog rock fans, today marks the 31st anniversary of the breakup of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Who can forget their video of Fanfare For The Common Man filmed in a snowbound Montreal Olympic Stadium. By the way, nice woolly jacket Keith!

Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed had a son (Nick) today in 1989. Happy 21st!!!
I see that Nick's inherited his dad's handsome good looks...

Thursday, January 21, 2010

"I'm a woman's man, no time to talk"

The Saturday Night Fever soundtrack hit number one on the US charts today in 1978, remaining there for 24 weeks. Strangely enough, white suits never really did take off in the fashion world.

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

"Like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes"

Ozzy bit the head off an unconscious bat on stage in Des Moines, Iowa on this day in 1982 thinking it was one of his rubber fakes. Later he went to hospital for a rabies vaccination...perhaps the bat was the one needing a shot!

"...and party every day"

SIXTY TODAY !!!

"Till death do us part, Till the sun falls from the sky"

January 18 should be known as "Divorce Day".
In 2004, J Lo and Cris Judd (yes, there's an "h" missing); in 2001, Noel and Meg; in 1996 Lisa Marie and MJ.

Sunday, January 17, 2010

Today marks the day in 1978 when Sid Vicious fell through a glass door at a San Francisco hotel. This scene was one of the highlights of the 1986 Alex Cox movie Sid and Nancy.

"That music's lost it's flavour"

On this day in 2002, Adam Ant was committed to a mental institution for pulling a gun on staff at a London pub. Perhaps we should have seen this coming 20 years earlier when he appeared wearing his Pirates of the Caribbean inspired clothing.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

"I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me"

Today in 1966 David Jones changed his name to David Bowie in order to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of the Monkees. Luckily he changed his hairstyle too in order to avoid confusion with Jimmy Saville.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

"They have everything for you men to enjoy"

On this day in 1979, the YMCA filed a lawsuit against the Village People over their song of the same name...which was subsequently dropped. Perhaps they realised that it's better to be talked about, than not talked about. Just ask Tiger woods.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

"When the feeling's gone and you can't go on"

Maurice Gibb died today in 2003 following complications resulting from abdominal surgery.
That sweater's a tragedy too.

"He tells me in his bedroom voice, C'mon honey, let's go make some noise"

It's Monday and it's Vicki Peterson's 52nd birthday (second from the right with the guitar).
Sorry Vicki, but I would have used my bedroom voice when speaking to Susanna Hoffs.
Gotta love the poodle hairstyles of the early 80s!

Sunday, January 10, 2010

"Put another notch in my lipstick case"

That'll be 57 notches. Happy birthday Pat. Nice fringes.

Friday, January 8, 2010

"Let me hear your body talk"

Today may well be Elvis Presley and David Bowie's birthdays...but I want to celebrate "Physical" hitting the number one spot on the US charts on this day in 1982!
Where would the eighties have been without leg warmers, lycra and headbands?

Sunday, January 3, 2010

"It's a nice day for a white wedding"

Congratulations to Domenica and Simon and their wedding day.
They went to the chapel and they got married.
